恐竜の種類は大きくわけて、鳥盤類と竜盤類の2種類に分類されます。 また、一般的に恐竜と思われているものの、実は恐竜ではない生物もいるそうです。 恐竜を簡単に説明すると、「直立歩行をする爬虫類」であり、関節を曲げずに歩行する生物が恐竜だと提言されています。 恐竜は、基本的に胴体の下に二本のうしろ足が直立して、歩いたり走ったりすることがとても得意だった動物といわれています。

恐竜の生きていた「中生代」という時代はさらに細かく分けられ、古いほうから「三畳紀」「ジュラ紀」「白亜紀」といいます。 最初の恐竜が現われたのは、今から2億3千万年ほど前、三畳紀の後半です。 恐竜は出現してから1億6000万年近くもの長い間に栄えていましたが、白亜紀の末、今からおよそ6600万年前にほとんどが絶滅してしまい、鳥類のグループだけが現在まで生き残りました。
